Are The Hands Part Of The Bat?

A batter is hit in the hands while holding the bat in the batter box. Is the hands part of the bat and is this pitch called a foul ball?
No. Since the hands are part of the batter's body, as long as the batter didn't swing at the ball then it is a dead ball and the batter is awarded first base.
